One of the myths about being a wedding MC is that you need to tell jokes.

It’s not the MCs job to tell jokes, they simply need to constantly move forward driving the momentum, introduce the next person making a toast or giving a speech.  Let THAT person tell the jokes.  As long as the guests know what is happening next and where it’s happening, you’ve done your job.  You don’t need to tell jokes.

Of course, your humour is probably part of the reason why the couple asked you to be the wedding MC.  Natural humour is different to searching Google to find some sort of wedding related joke to repeat or read out verbatim.  Too many of these jokes are about marriage rather than weddings.  While everyone might have a bit of a laugh about how marriage is a sentence or mother in laws are hard work etc, is it really appropriate just hours after the nuptials?

Never make fun of anyone, never joke about marriage or divorce or ex girlfriends.  Think about who the audience is, and what will they think of you when they see the video a week later, or a month, or a decade.   The old saying from my days in radio suggests “If in doubt, leave it out”.
